A Gaze Through Time

Some lives unfold quietly beyond the spotlight.

A street musician.
A scholar lost in thought.
A child waiting.
A passerby who disappears into the crowd.

They occupy the corners of the city, the edges of memory, and the spaces between moments.

For more than four decades, Shanghai artist Shen Yong has devoted his practice to observing these overlooked figures. Through expressive brushwork and a deeply human perspective, he transforms ordinary encounters into lasting images of dignity, solitude, resilience, and grace.

Many of his paintings feel like fragments of an unfinished film. A gesture, a glance, a fleeting presence. The narrative remains open, inviting viewers to enter the scene and discover their own stories.

Those in the Corner presents a selection of original paintings and limited-edition prints, offering a rare opportunity for North American audiences to experience the work of one of Shanghai's most respected contemporary painters.

About the Artist

Born in Shanghai in 1960, Tello Yong graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the China Academy of Art. He is a member of the China Artists Association and Vice Director of the Oil Painting Art Committee of the Shanghai Artists Association.

Over the past four decades, his work has been exhibited throughout China and internationally, including Germany, Russia, Spain, Japan, and Canada. His paintings have been collected by major institutions such as the Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai History Museum, Liu Haisu Art Museum, and the China Oil Painting Society.

Widely recognized for his distinctive figurative paintings and urban narratives, Shen Yong continues to explore the emotional landscape of contemporary life through a visual language that is both expressive and deeply humane.

Art In Time

Oakridge Park and True Colour Art Gallery partnered on “Art and Life,” a themed collaboration that presents contemporary art in a way that feels closer to everyday experience. Through an easy, visitor-friendly flow, the event invited guests to view the works up close and explore the creative process and material details through conversation, turning viewing into something more than appreciation—an experience that can be carried back into daily life.

Li Xuan

Li Xuan was an artist born in Beijing in 1941, who aimed to strike a balance between Eastern and Western art styles. By combining traditional Chinese ink wash techniques with Western abstraction, he created intricate dark landscapes that depict heavenly bodies of the night sky. Today, Li Xuan's unique and treasured paintings continue to draw and captivate new audiences of discerning art enthusiasts, and many have found their way into art collections worldwide.
